Locals of Ladakh consume a lot of vegetables, and may or may not always consume meat. And due to a lot of people with strict food preferences travelling to Ladakh, the region has now started stocking up, with atleast khichdi available at most places.
One is still advised to carry namkeen, theplas, etc. if food is a concern.
Due to a huge tourism interest, the local Ladakhis in the main regions can converse in broken Hindi / English. The people living in the remote areas still converse in their local tongue.
In the Summer Months (May/June to September) which is also the season time, the temperatures range from -1 to 25 degrees. It could get really hot in the day,m with chilly evenings.
The remaining months, that is; October to February see temperatures dipping to as low as -25 degrees at its peak.
The Ladakhi Cuisine takes influence from the Tibetan & Pakastani cuisines. They consume a lot of bread, broths & stews, that help in keeping the body warm.

Dishes & Specialities to Try:-
1.) Tingmo - Tingmo is a popular street food, that is a stew of vegetables or meat, served with fermented & steamed bread.
2.) Chhurpi & Khambir - Chhurpi is cheese made from Yak Milk. It is easily available in the local markets, in three varients - sweet, salty & plain. It is usually consumed with Khambir, which is a local Ladakhi bread made from whole wheat. Khambir is a common side accompaniment for most of the Ladakhi dishes.
3.) Thukpa - Thukpa is originally a Tibetan noodle soup, which is quite popular in this region as well. It is traditionally a stew or soup with noodles, vegetables and/or meat or egg, served piping hot that keeps the body warm.
4.) Momos & Mokthuk - Momos are known by most & loved by all. The Ladakhi momos are great as well. Now when the momos are served in a soup, then it becomes a Mokthuk, which is also a must try.
5.) Butter Tea - A Ladakhi favorite, the butter tea is prepared by adding butter and salt to a brewing pot of milk infused with tea leaves. The tea is salty, the butter helps in keeping the lips chapped in the extreme cold, and the tea also helps in keeping warm.
Many people prefer to travel to Leh/Ladakh by road. There is one entry/exit from the Manali side, that allows you to cross the serene Rohtang la & the Mighty Baralacha la, ending in Leh, the other entry/exit is from Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir), connecting to Leh via Sonamarg, Drass & Kargil, crossing the Zoji la.
Leh also has an airport - Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport that has daily direct flights from Delhi & Mumbai during the season.
The Indian Government is also planning to connect the region by a Rail network, that is expected to become the Highest Rail Network of the World, surpassing the current Chinese Marvel.
One should plan a minimum of 7 Days for a Ladakh trip. It can be done in as less as 5 Days too, but then its like a blur. 7 Days is for the ones who plan to travel by air / flight. The most advisable duration for a Ladakh trip is 11-12 Days, wherein you can cover the entire route by road on a bike or a vehicle, starting from Srinagar, and ending at Manali or vise versa. The Beauty of the place shines the most when you enter it, unravel it, and complete it with sometimes life-altering experiences.
If its your second visit and you have already completed the route by road, then it would be a good option to fly-in for 10 Days, and experience a few offbeat passes, lakes & villages, or experience one of the local Ladakhi festivals.
For travelers who would prefer to fly to Leh, the period is from April (still very cold), to September last week. For the more adventurous ones, and who can manage more time, the roads to Ladakh (Rohtang la & Baralacha la - from Manali) usually open in the last week of May or first week of June, whereas the pass on the Srinagar (J&K) side - Zoji la opens around mid/end May, and then the roads are open till the first week of October.
The flights to Leh are available the year round, and November to February is when the hardcore adventurists, trekkers, etc. visit the place to experience the numbing yet thrilling cold. That's when most of the passes are closed because of snow, and the lakes and the rivers are frozen.
The Climate in Ladakh is extreme. It is one of the Highest Cold Desert of the World, with temperatures dipping to as low as -40 degrees, in some areas, during the peak winter months. The Summers (June to September) on the other hand make this place a tourist hub, with travelers from all across the World coming here to experience True Majestic Beauty. But the nights even in the summer months can be quite chilly. The days can be quite harsh with the clear direct sunlight taking a toll on your skin. Here is a list of a few things that you should keep handy:-
1.) Woolens / Jackets / Sweaters - cover yourself in layers, so that its easy for you to peel off a Jacket when the sun is out bright, and pull it back on when it starts getting chilly.
2.) Woolen socks, gloves & cap - You may or may not need these, depends on how your body reacts to the cold, but always better to carry a pair or two
3.) Complete Bike protective gear for riders and pillions, with a solid helmet - For the ones who are planning to ride and experience the pristine beauty
4.) Track pants & quick dry t-shirts - 2-3 pairs of each
5.) Inners / thermals - These really help
6.) Good quality hiking / trekking shoes & a pair of flip flops
7.) UV-protective sunglasses
8.) Good SPF sunscreen (depending on your skin characteristic)
9.) Dettol 30ml bottle, with cotton and 2-3 packets of gauze
10.) Betadine tube - small
11.) Snickers Chocolate Bars
11.) Medicines as necessary (Common ailments during travel - Acute Mountain Syndrome (for high elevated places), upset stomach, nausea, headache, dehydration, etc.)

NOTE - Leh/Ladakh is located high up in the Himalayan Mountains, and being a desert at a high elevation, the volume of oxygen in the air is less. It takes a normal human body a while to acclimatize at such high altitudes, the locals however are by now used to the atmosphere. Many travelers consume a tablet called DIAMOX before travelling to Ladakh, as Diamox helps in increasing the capacity of the Lungs making one breathe in more air. Diamox has a sulphur base, which might cause allergy in a few people, so it is always better to consult your doctor before consuming it.
